Want to Run a PBN in your Program?

Did you know that there are 2.8 million Girl Scouts in the United State. If we exposed 1 percent (280,000) to the sport of girl's ice hockey and 10% (28,000/1866 teams of 15), imagine how we could make hockey grow in your area. The Girl Scouts have a program called GIRL SPORT and the focus to expose girls to non traditional sports for girls. The Put the Biscuit in Net Program offers your program an opportunity to expose your program to this market. How do we do that?

The PBN is a pilot program with USA Hockey and Girl Scouts USA. What do you need to start?

Looking forward to taking athe PBN Pledge with you in the future.

Regards,

Yevet Anderson, PBN Co-ordinator for USAH.

On Saturday November 10, five Tompkins Girls Hockey Association (TGHA) coaches became certified 'Put the Biscuit in the Net' (PBN) leaders through instruction by Yevet Anderson, PBN founder and USA Hockey Director for the Mid-American District.  PBN is a collaborative program of USA Hockey and the Girl Scouts of the USA.

Diane Duthie, Matt Ulinski, Ed Pasto, Becky Waddle and Barbara Horton are TGHA coaches who can offer PBN which introduces girls hockey to Girl Scouts  ages 5-19 in a series of three sessions which culiminates with a PBN badge. The format of Girl Scout programs will be familiar to PBN participants.

Teamwork between the Girl Scouts of the USA, Tompkins Girls Hockey Association (TGHA), and NYSAHA (New York State Amateur Hockey Association district of USA Hockey) has made the Ithaca area PBN program possible. NYSAHA has a supply of hockey equipment sets for events like PBN that introduce more young people to the sport.

Pre-registration is required for the PBN three sessions to be held at The RINK on E. Shore Drive.  Girl Scouts will attend as individuals or with their troops on Wed. Dec. 5, Tues. Dec. 18, and Thurs. Jan. 3.  There will be on ice activities and all equipment is provided for participants.  Coaches and players from TGHA will be at every session. Special guests from Cornell women's ice hockey, the Ithaca Shooting Stars, the Ithaca High girls varsity team, and the USA Olympic team will be invited, too.

Girls/Women's Ice Hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in America. Over 46,000 girls and women currently play hockey in the United States. In today's society we are all looking for a way to expose our young women to activities that will nurture life skills, sportsmanship, friendship, leadership and, most of all, wholesome, fun activities that can last a lifetime. The joining of Girl Scouts and girls hockey is natural. The PBN sessions are designed to introduce girls to the basics of ice hockey in a format similar to other scout programs with a patch to be earned and other familiar components.

DO YOU KNOW THE WAY TO SAN JOSE?

DO YOU KNOW THE WAY TO SAN JOSE WAS MORE THAN JUST THE LYRICS OF A FAMILIAR TUNE. 37 GIRL SCOUTS, THEIR PARENTS, AND FRIENDS FOUND THEIR WAY TO THE LOGITECH ICE AT SAN JOSE IN CALIFORNIA. WHILE THERE WAS NO ICE TO BE FOUND ON THE GROUND IN LATE MARCH IN THE SILICON VALLEY; THE ICE THAT WAS FOUND WAS JUST PERFECT FOR THE GIRLS TO TRY A NEW EXPERIENCE.

FROM AGES 6-17, THE GIRLS ( OF WHICH ONLY TWO HAD SKATED) LACED UP SKATES AND SETTLED INTO UNFAMILIAR HELMET HEADWARE FOR A MORNING OF SMILES GALORE. "ARE WE TOO OLD?" QUESTIONED THREE TEENAGED SENIOR SCOUTS. "WE WANT TO TRY HOCKEY" "I HAVE A DATE TONIGHT." SAID ONE. YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO EXPERIENCE OUR WONDERFUL SPORT. AND EXPERIENCE IT THEY DID. STARTS AND STOPS, PASSING AND SKATING, PLAYING THE LONG AWAITED GAME MADE THE THREE SESSION GLIDE BY FASTER THAN THE FOG ROLLING OFF THE OCEAN AND OVER THE MOUNTAINS.

"I PLAY HOCKEY" WAS THE CONVERSATION WITH FRIENDS AND HER DATE..AND WHAT A GREAT CONVERSATION IT WAS. "YES WE DO". THE GIRLS COULD NOT STOP TALKING ABOUT IT. "THE HARDEREST PART OF THE WHOLE THING WAS PUTTING ON THE STUFF" SAID ONE OF THE DAISY SCOUTS. "THE HOCKEY STUFF WAS FUN' SHE CONTINUED.

PARENTS APPLAUDED AND THE OOOOOS AND AWES FROM THE PARENT CONFIRMED THE EXPERIENCE. MIKE BRUINS OF LOGITECH ICE (mbruins@logitechice.com) AND ROD ROMANCHUK, (info@sjjrsharks.com) PRESIDENT OF THE SAN JOSE LADY SHARKS GIRLS PROGRAM WERE ON HAND TO ANSWER THOSE WONDERFUL QUESTIONS OF:

  • WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
  • IS THERE HOCKEY FOR ME?
  • CAN I JOIN A PROGRAM?

THE LOGITECH ICE AND SAN JOSE LADY SHARKS PROGRAM HAD PROGRAMS TO OFFER ALL THOSE INTERESTED FROM THEIR 12 WEEK FREE HOCKEY 1 TO THE GIRLS SHARK'S PROGRAM TEAM INFORMATION.

NOW MOST OF THE GIRLS WERE FAMILIAR WITH THE SAN JOSE SHARKS OF THE NHL BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT THE TRUE SHARK STARS IN THE EYES OF THE PBN PARTICIPANTS WERE THE JR. LADY SHARKS, WHO CAME OUT TO SHARE THEIR TIME AND SKILLS WITH THE GIRLS. WOW, I SKATED WITH THE SHARKS. COOL.

WELL, THEY MAY NEED TO GET A BIGGER SHARK TANK NOW THAT ALL THESE LITTLE MINNOWS HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO SKATE SHARK STYLE AND WITH TWO NEW PBN INSTRUCTOR TRAINERS FOR THE SAN JOSE AND LOS ANGELES AREAS AND 4 NEW PBN INSTRUCTORS, IT IS GOING TO BE A HOCKEY FEEDING FRENZY AS THEY SET UP MORE PBN PROGRAMS IN CALIFORNIA FOR THE SCOUTS. REMEMBER TOO THAT THE USA HOCKEY GIRLS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2007 WILL BE HELD IN SAN JOSE. BET THERE WILL BE A SCHOOL OF NEW LITTLE SHARKS SWARMING THOSE GAMES.

KEEP CHECKING FOR PICTURES OF THE EVENT. HAVE SOME? SEND TO US www.pbnprogram@earthlink.net

PS..KELSEY, KAYLEE, AND ALEXANDRA.....THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.........AND FOR THE SQUARE CUBE...YOU GO GIRLS.

GETTING THE POINTE OF HOCKEY AT SOUTHPOINTE

Biscuit in the Net

Cecil and Peters Township are becoming important magnets for girls who want to play serious ice hockey

Rachel Bodine faces off with Alyssa Thomas

There used to be a time when hockey was considered a sport for the boys. Any girls that wished to play had to become members of boys teams, and as often as not were permitted only limited playing time on the ice.

All of this began to change about 10 years ago. Now girls hockey has become a force to be reckoned with in Western Pennsylvania, and thanks to the efforts of a group of Girl Scout leaders, the way may be paved for female hockey players of the future.

More than 30 girl scouts between the ages of seven and 14 took part in a Put the Biscuit in the Net program at the Southpointe Iceoplex late last fall. Here, they learned the basics of the game from women athletes on the Robert Morris University Division I hockey team, as well as coaches and instructors. Part of a national program to teach young girls the fundamentals of the game, it set the stage (or in this case the ice), for the next generation of girls team players.

Im ecstatic, says Tera Crowe, one of the programs organizers, whose own daughter, Brooke, began playing at the Iceoplex, and is now part of Team Pittsburgh, an elite group of girls teams from the region. Many of these girls had never stepped foot on the ice until [that] weekend, and by Sunday afternoon they were racing each other to the biscuit [puck] and putting it in the net.

The skating program was developed through USA Hockey, in cooperation with the Girl Scouts of America, and featured specially-trained instructors. The biscuit name was adopted in accordance with the famous Girl Scout cookies, which were originally called biscuits. The program has achieved nationwide success.

The program at the Iceoplex was awesome, says Nate Handrahan, head coach of the Robert Morris University Womens team, and one of the instructors who was on the ice for the program. I think we have to let young girls know that they can play the game. The girls we had down there know that you can get to a very elite level. I think the success of womens hockey is just letting girls get the exposure to the fact that they can play the game.

The organizers of girls hockey at the Iceoplex are hoping that the Biscuit in the Net program will continue an already growing program now underway at the Cecil Township facility. Two nights a week are devoted to girls hockey at the present time, under the Southpointe Rink Rats program.

Southpointe hasnt become one of the hotbeds of girls hockey yet, but its growing quickly, says Robin Stanton, who has worked with hockey programs at the Iceoplex. Peters Township now has a lot of girls in their developmental program, and that is going to mean more teams and ice time in the future.

Prior to last season, there were no girls teams calling the Iceoplex their home, but the facility has been encouraging the development of programs for young girls. They held tryouts for teams this past summer. About a dozen girls tried out, and by the first practice in August, more than 20 girls were on the roster.

If there is a reason for optimism for growth in girls hockey in Pittsburgh and at the Iceoplex, future players need look no further than the existing NCAA womens hockey programs at Robert Morris University and at Chatham College, where a Division III NCAA program has been underway. As for role models, young girls might look to Canonsburgs Shannon Anesetti, who played on Canon McMillans varsity boys team, and has gone on to play Division III womens hockey at Buffalo State University. Additionally, the girls Team Pittsburgh has attracted some of the regions top players, including Stephanie Lemieux, the daughter of Mario Lemieux.

I hope it continues to grow, says Stanton. At the present time, there arent enough teams in Pittsburgh to balance out the skill levels, and right now teams have everything from beginning skaters to those who have been playing since they were five. The more players we have, the more teams there will be. Programs like Biscuit in the Net are a good way to get girls involved in hockey.
